With the help of Ashley, Jack and his partner Bobby, a fellow homicide detective, they begin to uncover evidence of an underground network of drug dealing cops working for an unknown figure called "Georgie".

Bobby informs Jack that Internal Affairs need to meet with him and rule him out of the investigation. Jack meets with the detective in charge, Roger Lee Byron Mann , who tries to insinuate that Jack was having an affair with Garrett's wife and that Jack somehow murdered the family.

Jack is insulted by the accusations, mocking Roger and then leaving. Later, following another call with Ashley, Jack identifies a car seen near the house that belongs to Roger.

He reports his suspicions to Bobby who indicates that Roger may be the infamous Georgie or at least working for him.

Jack is then wounded investigating the car lock where Roger's car is hit. While wounded, he receives another call from Ashley and gets her to change her past.

In the future, Jack collapses and appears to bleed out, though not before telling Ashley to call the police on her father, due to his apparent drug abuse.

She does so, and in changing the past, she also changes the future, and Jack is never shot. However, the date of the murder ends up being a day earlier and the day Ashley is currently in.

She also finds Georgie's hideout but is forced to flee when one of the men there spots her. She manages to escape but loses her backpack in the process.

She then calls Jack, and he tells her the truth about their circumstances and urges her to flee from town in order to survive; she agrees.

Jack then approaches Bobby and their chief Howard Alfred Molina with the evidence they have uncovered, realizing that Georgie wasn't a person; it was a group of multiple people, which is why he was never found.

However, Bobby suddenly turns on Jack and shoots Howard dead. Jack tries to flee but is wounded in the leg and falls to the ground.

Meanwhile, instead of running away, Ashley calls Bobby and asks him for a ride home. As a result, when they arrive, he confronts Garrett with a shotgun, demanding to know why Garrett never left town when he promised Bobby had instructed them to do so in an effort to protect them.

He also interrogates Ashley as to how she had found Georgie's hideout since he has found Ashley's backpack. Garrett tries to reason with Bobby, but he shoots Garrett and his wife dead.

Bobby chases Ashley, who, thanks to Jack's insights from the future, manages to escape. In the present, Bobby demands to know who Jack's witness is.

Jack discloses it is Ashley from the past, with Bobby not believing him. Ashley then calls Jack, which distresses Bobby, and he shoots Jack in the hand, destroying his phone in the process.

Don't Let Go starts full on and finishes at the same speed. And the in between was so good I did not want to stop reading at any point.

I must have been three quarters of the way through when a little suspicion popped up of who might be the main culprit. Then I thought 'surely not' but it was.

What a twist! I smiled when Myron Bolitar paid a short visit. It was As far as I am concerned Harlan Coben writes good books, very good books and excellent books.

It was a pity Win was not with him. Character development is one of Coben's many strong points and I very quickly became attached to Nap.

What a pity this is not the start of a series as he would probably be at least the equal of Myron if not even better.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys the genre. View all 6 comments. Don't Let Go is the latest stand alone by crime writer Harlan It is the story of Nap short for Napolean Dumas whose TWIN brother was found dead on the town's train tracks along with the brother's girlfriend.

Nap's girlfriend mysteriously disappeared after this and so the story begins. Coben is a good writer. His books keep you entertained and, admittedly, I read this one straight through with no breaks.

There is a lot of dialogue so it's an easy read. I don't read Coben's series and rarely read his stand alones.

I find his books to be like meatloaf and I prefer grilled tuna. He also manages always to throw in nuggets of propaganda that aren't true as though they are and if they are read often enough by enough people, even in fiction, then people believe them.

Case in point. Military torture works. Liberals say it doesn't but if it was your kid whose life was at stake you'd want the mi,Italy to use torture.

NO, an emphatic NO. Torture does not work. It has been proven time and again. You get information, but it's not good Intel and all you've done is harden the people even more.

It wasn't relative to this storyline, he added because it's what he does. Ugh, no more Coben for me. View all 14 comments.

Another gem of a book by Mr Harlan Coben you had a cop Dumas who was struggling to cope with the death of 2 teenagers 15 years earlier one was his brother, now brought into a case similar by Lieutenant Stacy Bates a cop killer is on the loose Rex Canton was murdered in cold blood, Nap knew him but hadn't seen him in 15 years.

All in all a very satisfying read. View all 17 comments. Sep 25, Amy rated it it was amazing Shelves: physical-arcs , netgalley. The main character, Nap reminded me of a combination of Myron and Win so my craving for them was partially satiated.

This was twisty and full of deceit and long buried betrayals, classic Coben doing what he does extremely well.

I immediately connected with him, his story is heartbreaking, he lost his twin brother and his girlfriend within a short period of time and has never quite been the same since.

All of my reviews can be found on www. View all 5 comments. His books are usually well plotted out mysteries that keep you engaged.

Not so much with this one. For starters, Napoleon Dumas initially comes across as a bit of a jerk.

Now comes word that his HS girlfriend might have resurfaced. There are lots of conspiracy theories here. And initially, it appears that Nap is really weaving a story out of some pretty thin threads.

Like his mentor, I struggled to see if there were connections were Nap saw them. The use of a Nike missile site brought back lots of memories to me.

There was one near where I grew up that was always a poorly guarded secret. While this story kept me engaged, I never felt I could buy into it.

It is just unbelievable in so many ways. Never able to let go, he also thought constantly of the girl he loved, Maura, who had also disappeared that night.

Until the night a fellow cop was gunned down in cold blood. And started his search in earnest. Would Nap discover what had really happened to Leo and Diana?

Where Maura had been for the past fifteen years? Loved it, and highly recommend it! Aug 01, Book of Secrets rated it really liked it.

Nap's always wondered if there was more to the story, and of course, if Maura's disappearance was somehow related. Now a clue from a crime scene in another town sets his investigation in motion again.

I especially loved Nap's sarcastic wit. Mar 30, Barbara rated it liked it Shelves: bayb Fifteen years before the story opens, in , Napoleon Nap Dumas was an year-old high school jock in Westbridge, New Jersey Then Nap's world collapsed overnight.

While the athlete was at an away hockey game his twin brother Leo, and Leo's girlfriend Diana, were hit by a train and killed.

On that same evening, Maura broke up with Nap, left town, and disappeared. Nap couldn't believe these traumatic events were Fifteen years before the story opens, in , Napoleon Nap Dumas was an year-old high school jock in Westbridge, New Jersey Nap couldn't believe these traumatic events were unconnected and became obsessed with finding out more about that fateful night.

Nap talked to Maura's mother, who would only say her daughter had changed schools, and nothing more. Nap even broke into Maura's house to look for information Afterwards, Nap was taken under the wing of Diana's heartbroken father, Police Captain Augie Styles, who ascribed the deaths of Diana and Leo to foolish behavior caused by drugs and alcohol.

Ever since the calamitous high school events, Nap has been mourning his brother - with whom he'd shared 'a womb and a room'; and yearning for Maura - who he considered the love of his life.

Thus Nap forewent college, became a police officer, and is now a detective in Westbridge. Nap's a good cop, but he doesn't always follow the rules.

For one thing, Nap 'corrects' the behavior of men who commit domestic abuse by beating them up. For another thing, Nap illicitly put Maura's fingerprints and DNA into the national database, asking to be informed if there's a hit.

And now, a decade and a half after Maura vanished, there's a hit. Maura's fingerprints are found in the rented car of a man who shot and killed a Pennsylvania police officer, Sargeant Rex Canton.

As it happens, Rex Canton was Nap's high school classmate, and belonged to a teenage 'Conspiracy Club' with Leo, Diana, Maura, a boy named Hank - who has since succumbed to mental illness, and a girl called Beth - who's now a physician in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In high school, the members of the Conspiracy Club were 'investigating' a secretive government installation near Westbridge - a facility that was fenced off and liberally posted with 'No Trespassing' signs.

The base supposedly contained Nike missiles during the cold war, and was now used for some unknown purpose. The teenagers would lurk around the installation, go up to the fence, try to peer in, take photos, and so on.

Nap comes to suspect that the activities of the Conspiracy Club led to the deaths of Leo and Diana fifteen years ago, and to Maura running off.

Moreover, reverberations from those old days may have sent a murderer after Rex Canton just a few days ago. Nap wants to interview the remaining members of the Conspiracy Club, but this turns out to be a difficult task.

Mentally disturbed Hank, who was recently accused of exposing himself to schoolgirls - and bullied online - has disappeared; and Dr.

Beth seems to be hiding out and not answering the phone. What could possibly be going on? As Nap pursues his inquiries he questions people who knew Maura, Leo, and Diana; consults with Captain Augie Styles; helps investigate Rex Canton's murder in Pennsylvania talks to Walt's distressed father; comes face to face with pushy government agents; unearths important evidence; and so on.

In the end, Nap learns the truth about all the deaths and disappearances, and the solution is a corker. Most of the story is told by Nap, partly as a first person narrative, and partly as a one-sided conversation with his dead brother Leo.

Nap has a snarky sense of humor, and his amusing quips lighten the otherwise dark story. The novel is engaging, but I sometimes found it difficult to suspend disbelief.

For instance, I don't think an average year-old girl has the know-how to disappear at the drop of a hat. Other things bothered me as well, but I don't want to give away spoilers.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and recommend it to fans of thrillers. The conspiracy theory driven plot was boring.

A little too far fetched with high school kids and the military. View all 4 comments. Loved the character Nap. Could see the clever witty writing through this character as always from HC.

Review to come. I have left it too late to review. As much as I love HC, by all means I do not love them all.. Witty, cranky; set in his ways.

HC does dry humour with his flawed characters, usually when the protag is a male. I love those parts of his characters, and there wil Loved the character Nap.

I love those parts of his characters, and there will always be at least one in every book he writes. The writing is always top notch though.

I will always go beck for more. I forgot to mention! Spoiler in this book for the Myron Bolitar series - a major event was mentioned.

However, my dear fellows and bookish mates, I truly regret to inform you, that those days are gone!

So deep that it could perfectly be the main theme of a Philosophy class. Now suppose you were there too. What would you have to say about the philosophical deepness of such a beginning?

Would you find it enough appealing to eagerly jump to the next line? I am a big fan of Harlan Coben and this book did not disappoint.

It was a non-stop , fast paced, entertaining psychological thriller that I devoured in one sitting. Complex characters, witty dialogue with plenty of twists and turns makes it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

This book was filled with all of the twists and turns that I have come to expect from Harlan Coben. The story is told from Nap's point of view.

Nap is a New Jersey Detective with his own sense of right and wrong. His twin brother, Leo, and Leo's girlfriend, Diana, died together back in high school.

Most people think that it was a double suicide but nobody really seems to know what happened. Nap's high school girlfriend, Maura, disappeared at the same time as his twin brother's death.

Nap has always been somewhat desperate to learn what really happened. When Maura's fingerprints are discovered at the murder scene of another high school classmate, Nap starts trying to piece everything together.

He learns that not everything is as he thought it was and secrets have been kept from him by those he thought he could trust.

As he learns more about that night, he realizes how much he really doesn't know. Can he piece together everything from all of those years ago before it it too late?

I thought that the writing was great. I loved the fact that I never could guess where this book was going.

There were so many twists and turns in this novel that the excitement level of the story never wavered. I was truly surprised by so many of the revelations and found myself reading the book at a furious pace to find out what would happen next.

The pacing of the book was perfectly done with action scenes spaced out around more thoughtful ones. I felt Nap's desperation to learn the truth behind what happened to his twin and wanted everything to come out okay in the end.

I was delighted to see one of my favorite characters, Myron Bolitar, make a quick appearance in the story. I would highly recommend this book to fans of mysteries with lots of twists and turns.
